From Seed to Sprout: Mastering the Art of Germination at Home
Share
Germination is the magical moment when life begins from a seed. At Hortica.in, we believe every gardener—beginner or seasoned—should understand the process to give their seeds the best possible start.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Choose the Right Medium
A light, well-draining medium is essential. Cocopeat and perlite blends or seed-starting mixes are excellent choices. Avoid garden soil for germination—it’s too heavy and may harbor pathogens.
2. Sowing Seeds Correctly
Different seeds have different needs. Fine seeds should be lightly scattered on the surface, while larger ones can be sown 3mm - 6mm deep. Always moisten the medium before sowing to prevent disturbing seeds afterward.
3. Ideal Germination Conditions
Seeds thrive in warmth and moisture. Use a humidity dome or cover your seed tray with plastic wrap. Most seeds germinate well at 20–25°C. Keep them in indirect light until sprouting.
4. Water Wisely
Overwatering is a common killer of seedlings. Mist or use a gentle spray. Once sprouted, reduce humidity and ensure adequate airflow to prevent fungal diseases like damping-off.
5. Know When to Transplant
Once seedlings develop two sets of true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle, it’s time to transplant. Handle them by the leaves—not the stem—to avoid damage.
Gardening is patience in action. Start right, and you’ll be rewarded with strong, healthy plants!
